Alison Coppock

Alison Coppock

Alison Coppock is junior from Philadelphia, PA. In addition to being a rabid Phillies fan and coffee addict, she is currently a member of UNC’s National Student Advertising Competition team and the UNC Ad Club.

Alison plans to graduate in May 2012 with degrees in Advertising and Sociology.

“The [FOX Sports] U program is, in many ways, as close as advertising students can get to the real deal. The process of completing a full campaign and working side-by-side with the Fox Sports executives has been a valuable and unforgettable experience.”

Anna Chase

Anna Chase

Anna Chase, originally from Orlando, Florida, is a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  An avid Tar Heel sports fan, she plans to graduate in May 2011 with a major in Strategic Communication and a certificate in Sports Communication.

“This project was an incredible opportunity to work with a real-world client that took not only a interest in the completion of the project, but the students’ personal development as well.”

Danna Klein

Danna Klein, while technically having been labeled a ‘Journalism and Mass Communication Major with a focus in Strategic Communications,” rarely likes being placed in a box – so to speak. Hailing from the great state of New York, Danna is on track to graduate in May of 2011 and hopes to be making her way back up to the concrete jungle in pursuit of her passion: creating unprecedented work in an environment that thrills. For now, Danna is keeping herself busy as the Account Services Intern at Ogilvy & Mather in Durham, a Marketing Strategist for UNC-CH’s Marketing and Communications Student Advisory Board, and participating in this year’s American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition. Stay tuned.

The challenge of creating an exciting campaign took the usual hum-drum work of hypothetical situations and accelerated it to an unimaginable level. Working with real people on a real campaign and producing real results is outstanding. I came up with tactics that Fox Sports Carolinas will be executing – what more could I ask for? Simply put, it was awesome.”

Sara Elizabeth Whelchel

Sara Elizabeth Whelchel

Sara Elizabeth Whelchel is a junior from Charlotte, NC. She is currently pursuing a double major in Journalism with a concentration in Advertising as well as Spanish. She is an active member of Alpha Delta Pi, The Daily Tar Heel and the Ad Club. She recently held an internship position with Fly Communications, Inc. in New York City. Upon graduation in May 2012, she hopes to work at an agency in a creative or copywriting role.

“The [FOX Sports] University program was an opportunity for us as students to bring the real world back into the classroom. Textbooks aside, we were provided with a learning environment that we could create and be creative. And we had a great time—start to finish.”


Fall 2010 Project Description

In the fall of 2010, FOX Sports U students at the University of North Carolina were challenged with building greater awareness and participation for the newly-launched consumer website, The class developed and presented innovative concepts on how to brand and market the site. They also created ways to produce consumer-generated content using the latest in social media tactics and trends.


Professor Profile

Dana McMahan

Dana McMahan

B.F.A., James Madison University

Dana McMahan joined the school’s faculty July 1, 2008.

Prior to coming to the school, McMahan developed and launched her own company, specializing in products for women and children. The Laughing Turtle, Inc. currently operates in North Carolina and Virginia locations and includes retail, wholesale, and internet ventures. She formed her company after more than a decade as an advertising and marketing creative.

McMahan worked as an art director at various advertising agencies, including New York’s McCann-Erickson. She served as Creative Director of Charron, Schwartz and Partners and consulted extensively with McKinney as a creative in new business development. Her clients have included L’Oreal, Tiffany & Company, GE Capital, WestPoint Stevens, ABC News and Jameson Irish Whiskey, among others. She previously taught advertising creative as an adjunct professor in the school.

She is involved in many community organizations including board memberships with SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals, and Kidzu Children’s Museum. She serves as an advisory board member for UNC Center for Women’s Health Research, and Chapel Hill Preservation Society.
