What was your FOX Sports University project about?

For my first project, we were tasked with developing a creative messaging program for ‘MLB Green’ environmental sustainability initiatives during the 2021 All-Star Game. My second project revolved around FOX Deportes 25th anniversary and developing a campaign through social media, alternative broadcasting and ethnographic initiatives to promote the station.

What is your current job title - what job responsibilities fall under this role?

I am currently a Coordinator in the Insights & Analytics department. I support the executive of the department, Michael Mulvihill, and am an extra set of hands on our College Strategy & Consumer Insights teams.

HOW DID YOUR TIME WORKING ON A FOX SPORTS UNIVERSITY PROJECT HELP PAVE YOUR CAREER PATH?

My Real World Experience directly led to an internship with FOX Sports in the College Strategy & Consmer Insights deparments, which lasted for six months and allowed me to create significant and meaningful relationships with several company employees. During my senior year, a job opening became available in the department I had worked in, and I was contacted to see if I was interested in the job, which I accepted.

What was the most important lesson or skill that you learned while working with FOX Sports University?

The most important skill I learned while participating in FOX Sports U was creativity. In conventional classroom settings, it’s easy to be confined to the syllabus, course material, and tests/ quizzes, but participating in a project-based course allowed me to generate ideas without the limitations that standard classes include. More than anything, putting myself in the shoes of a FOX Sports employee empowered and motivated me to think about broader company strategy, tactical implementation of creative messaging, and the future of the sports industry as a whole.

What skills or traits would you consider vital for anyone entering the sports and entertainment field post-college?

Curiosity and determination are the first two things that come to mind. There are many kids in the world who love sports, but actually working in it requires a deeper level of enthusiasm for the industry at large. Just being a fan is not enough! I would also add that the competitive aspect of the industry could be discouraging to some people, so having dedication and persistence is critical. I remember being rejected from almost every internship I applied to, but that never stopped me!

What advice would you offer students your age looking to land an internship or a full-time job at a place like FOX?

One piece of advice I’d give Real World participants would be to take it seriously. Often in group project settings, it’s easy to take the path of least resistance and leave your work for the last minute. But I quickly realized that there was an opportunity to get my foot in the door with FOX Sports, which completely changed my perspective on how I would approach the work. I would strongly encourage participants to realize the opportunity in front of them and ensure that their work is their best. You never know who’s on the other side of the call and what they can do for your career
