James Stramm

James Stramm

James Stramm is a senior advertising and Spanish double major and music minor. After graduation, he plans on teaching English in Spain for a year. James is passionate about music, film and literature, and would like to work in the entertainment industry.

“Though the project was incredibly demanding, it never felt like work. Our group really had a ton of fun pushing each other to come up with the best pitch possible.”

“I enjoyed the creative freedom we were given with the project. Fox Sports really encouraged us to think outside the box and come up with crazy ideas.”

“As a huge sports fan, it was great to create ideas that would be involved in broadcasts that I watch regularly.”

 

Jonathan Manthey

Jonathan Manthey

Jonathan Manthey is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina and is a May 2016 graduate from the School of Media and Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated with a BA in Advertising with a minor in Spanish. Jonathan is a certified whitewater raft guide, open water scuba diver, and enjoys all types of thrill seeking outdoor activities. After graduation, Jonathan hopes to move to Australia and pursue a career in sports and brand marketing and management.

Austin Hampton

Austin Hampton

Austin Hampton hails from Washington, D.C. where he attended St. Albans School for Boys before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Austin, a junior set to graduate in May of 2017, studies strategic communication at Carolina’s School of Media and Journalism. Following graduation, Austin hopes to work either in the realm of strategic communication or the world of sports business. Having a passion for basketball, Austin’s ultimate dream is to be the GM of his hometown Washington Wizards. Austin’s other interests include men’s footwear, the music stylings of Kanye West, and the enigmatic Chipotle Mexican Grill.

“Working with FOX Sports U gave me the opportunity to collaborate with my classmates and gave me the feeling that my work in the classroom actually mattered.”

“While developing a partnership between FOX Sports and Airbnb, I had the opportunity to work creatively and think independently—it gave me the chance to work outside of my comfort zone.”

Courtney Jacobs

Courtney Jacobs

After each blissful semester in Chapel Hill, Courtney returns to a land of darker blue known as Durham, North Carolina. She attended Durham School of the Arts for high school where she spent much of her time creating music, painting and drawing. She will graduate from UNC in May 2017 with a double major in media and journalism, with an advertising concentration, and communication studies, with a media production concentration. In her spare time, Courtney copyedits for the student-run newspaper The Daily Tar Heel and acts as the art chair for the Carolina Union Activities Board. Her career interests are to work in creative advertising, particularly copywriting and art direction, and to eventually pursue a career in media and entertainment law.

“It was hard work, but knowing Fox Sports and Airbnb inside and out allowed us to let our creative ideas run wild before taming and presenting our best. You learn about their strengths, their images and their desires as companies, and fashion a mutually beneficial relationship between the two. It’s like a puzzle where you create the final picture.”

Ian Josey

Ian Josey

Ian is a junior Media and Journalism major at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Outside of class, Ian has a passion for creating engaging video content on his YouTube channel, Walkosey Productions. He is pursuing a second B.A. in music from UNC.  Ian has performed with the UNC Trombone Choir, Charanga Carolina, and the UNC Jazz Band.  Ian is a discussion group leader in Cru (formerly Campus Crusade) at UNC.  Ian wants to follow his passion for video to a career.

In the fall of 2015, FOX Sports U students at the University of North Caroline were tasked with developing multi-platform sales and brand integration opportunities for FOX Sports and partners.

 

Professor Profile

Dana McMahan

Dana McMahan

Dana McMahan joined the school’s faculty July 1, 2008. Prior to coming to the school, McMahan developed and launched her own company, specializing in products for women and children. The Laughing Turtle, Inc. currently operates in North Carolina and Virginia locations and includes retail, wholesale, and internet ventures. She formed her company after more than a decade as an advertising and marketing creative.

McMahan worked as an art director at various advertising agencies, including New York’s McCann-Erickson. She served as Creative Director of Charron, Schwartz and Partners and consulted extensively with McKinney as a creative in new business development. Her clients have included L’Oreal, Tiffany & Company, GE Capital, WestPoint Stevens, ABC News and Jameson Irish Whiskey, among others. She previously taught advertising creative as an adjunct professor in the school.

She is involved in many community organizations including board memberships with SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals, and Kidzu Children’s Museum. She serves as an advisory board member for UNC Center for Women’s Health Research, and Chapel Hill Preservation Society.
