Ari Gilberg

Ari Gilberg

Ari Gilberg is originally from Livingston, New Jersey and will graduate in May 2017 from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University with a B.S. in Newspaper and Online Journalism. Throughout his time at Syracuse, Ari has written for a variety of publications, including Nunes Magician, The Daily Orange, and The Stand, among others. He also previously worked as a sports editorial intern for Business Insider and the New York Daily News. In addition to his experience working as a journalist, Ari has also trained as an Army ROTC cadet, and is ranked in the top 10 percent of the country.  After graduation, he plans to commission into the U.S. Army Reserves as second lieutenant and pursue a career in either sports journalism or strategy and research for a major sports network.

Knowing Fox Sports U valued the ideas and findings we presented and would consider implementing them in some capacity is indescribable.

The best way to learn is through personal experience, and the experience I gained while working with Fox Sports U will help me in any and all of my future endeavors.

Throughout my time at Syracuse University, this was truly the most enjoyable class I have taken.

Randy Ben Posner

Randy Ben Posner

Randy is a Junior at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications majoring in Television Radio and Film with a minor in Strategic Management in the Whitman School of Management. Randy is from Livingston, NJ where he discovered his passion for production after being accepted into his high school’s Advanced TV Production program as a Junior. Last summer, he worked as a General Production intern at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and looks forward to a career in live entertainment television.

FOX Sports U provided us with the real world experience of an internship in a setting that felt like anything but a classroom.

The FOX Sports University program is the perfect balance of learning and doing – you can’t get this experience anywhere else.

Competing with the top, most knowledgeable Newhouse students drove us to think harder and work cohesively.  Having access to FOX Sports executives throughout the semester was invaluable and drove our project from an idea to reality.

James Hadnot

James Hadnot

James Hadnot is a senior Broadcast and Digital Journalism major in the S.I. Newhouse of Public Communications on the campus of Syracuse University. James also carries minors in African American Studies and Sports Management. After graduation, James plans to pursue a career in Sports Journalism. James loves all aspects of the profession especially play by play. So, James will be looking to continue doing the many things he’s already done on the campus of SU including announcing, hosting, and reporting for Syracuse football and basketball. Personally, James is a people person. He thoroughly enjoys meeting new people and diving into their stories. Also, James is a huge fan of hip-hop, R&B, and the 90’s Black Culture.

My Fox Sports University experience gave me the ability to collaborate with students who I don’t often get a chance to interact with due to our different majors. The project allowed me to get an amazing perspective on how different industries interpret situations.

I thoroughly enjoyed the problem solving aspect of the Fox Sports University project. The ability to work directly with FS1 and create a plan for its success was stupendous.

I liked the fact that everybody attacked the question given to us by Fox Sports in a diverse way. Different projects focused on specific insights into sports, and I left feeling more knowledgeable on how to connect with people through.

Benjamin Gramley

Benjamin Gramley

Benjamin Gramley is from Reading, Pennsylvania. He attended high school at Berks Catholic, where he participated in National Honors Society, was captain of the soccer team and attained the rank of Eagle Scout during his Junior year. Benjamin is currently a Junior at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University majoring in Broadcast and Digital Journalism. After graduation in the Spring Semester of 2018, Benjamin hopes to pursue a future as in Sports Broadcasting, hopefully as a Sports Personality for a talk show. Benjamin comes from a big, loud, Italian family, who distilled in him a love for Sports, especially all things Pittsburgh. Benjamin also considers himself a huge movie buff, and ever since he was a little kid, was raised to be the biggest Disney fanatic on the face of the earth.

I loved working with Fox Sports 1. The group that I worked with was great, and the experience gave me invaluable experience of what it would be like to work in the field, as well as giving me great connections to work with.

It was really cool that Fox Sports 1, and Fox Sports University, allowed you, as a college student, to potentially make a difference and do something meaningful in the industry.

The people at Fox Sports were really nice and very open to the ideas that we had. They really valued our opinions and the insights that we had as young adults.

 

Fall 2016 Project Description

Students at Syracuse University S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications were challenged to research and develop a strategy that FOX Sports can utilize to put FS1 and its Studio Show programming top of mind for sports fans.

Ed Russell

Ed Russell

Ed Russell spent 25 years in the advertising business working for some of the largest and best known firms in the world. He has worked on most every product category in nearly every market around the globe.

He began his advertising career as a copywriter with one of the most awarded agencies in Chicago. Following graduate school, he went to work for Saatchi & Saatchi in New York City. In 1989, he moved to Frankfurt, Germany as European Account Director of Saatchi & Saatchi’s largest business; Ariel detergent (Tide in Europe). The Berlin Wall came down six months after he arrived, and suddenly he had the job of opening a dozen new offices all over Eastern Europe.

After his stint in Germany, Russell moved east to become CEO of Leo Burnett’s office in Warsaw, Poland. Though the country initially had no advertising business, the Warsaw office became Leo Burnett’s third most award-winning office in the world.

Russell later moved to Leo Burnett’s Chicago headquarters, where he led the agency’s Procter & Gamble international business, their second largest global business. Russell was responsible for 410 brands in 98 countries and managed nearly $1 billion in billings. The agency won more new business from P&G during this time than in their entire history.

Russell wrote Leo Burnett’s international training program, “LeoSmarts.”

He is the author of “The Fundamentals of Marketing” from AVA Academic Publishing and various other writings.

He splits his time between Syracuse, NY and the Adirondack Mountains. He is married with two daughters; one a social worker and one a media planner at Crispin Porter + Bogusky in Boulder, CO.

John Nicholson

John Nicholson

John Nicholson ‘68 is director of the Newhouse Sports Media Center at Syracuse University. He has more than 40 years of local and network broadcasting experience in sports and news, and has taught courses in both areas at Newhouse since 1998.

Nicholson has appeared in event and magazine programming on ESPN, USA Network, SNY, NESN and in syndication. He has hosted events including airplane racing, hydroplane racing, water skiing, paintball competition, American Kennel Club dog shows, the Incredible Dog Challenge and the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. He has also hosted live pre- and post-game coverage of SU home football and basketball games on Orange All-Access and WSYR Radio in Syracuse.

He has served as coordinating producer for several documentary-style DVDs, including histories of University of Southern California and Notre Dame Football for Warner Home Video and Syracuse’s “The Legend of 44.”

Nicholson reported and anchored news for more than 25 years at television stations in markets including Syracuse, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, Houston and New York. His awards include a Florida Emmy for public service broadcasting, a National Association of Television Program Executives award and numerous local and state awards for investigative and general assignment reporting.

As an undergraduate he rowed for the varsity crew and in 2013 he was honored as an SU Varsity Club Letter Winner of Distinction.
