Michelle Skalrud

Michelle Skalrud

Michelle Skalrud is a part-time student at Columbia University achieving a Masters in Sports Management. She is expected to graduate from the program in May 2018.  Michelle is a newly admitted attorney in New York and New Jersey and currently works at CAA in their Sports Business and Legal Affairs Department. Her ultimate goal is to work for the NBA and eventually become the first female NBA Commissioner. She currently lives in Manhattan and enjoys to cook and travel the world.

Jane Wang

Jane Wang

Rizhen(Jane) Wang is from Beijing, China. She graduated from Peking University and Beijing Sport University in July, 2015 and received her B.S. in Economics and B.A. in Sports Industry Management. She is currently a master’s candidate at Columbia University Sports Management and will graduate in 2016. During undergraduate, she worked for Beijing Sports Administration Center for one year and participated in two world level sports events at an operation position. Her passion in sports and data led her to digging deeper in sports analytics. She served as a digital and ticket strategy intern at USTA. She conducted data analytics with a focus on the development and design of US Open premier sponsor campaigns. She is currently working on quant based sports projects with Bain & Company Greater China. Outside of school and work life Jane enjoys tennis, basketball, music (flute and piccolo) and reading.

Angela Yang

Angela Yang

Angela is a student in the MS Sports Management program at Columbia University and is due to graduate in December 2016. She is originally from China and moved to the UK in 2004. The same year, she started her career as a freelance tennis writer covering major tennis tournaments in the UK. She received her BSc Economics and LLM Law degrees from University College London. After graduation, she spent 4 years working as a Portfolio Manager at Barclays Bank. She currently interns with the U.S. Olympic Committee working directly with the CEO on strategic planning. She is passionate about business development roles that bridge analytical power and creative solutions to make positive impact.

Brad Tuyay

Brad Tuyay

Brad Tuyay is from San Diego, CA. He obtained a B.S. in Finance, Real Estate, and Law from Cal Poly Pomona.
While growing up in San Diego, he helped develop a youth beach volleyball program for the California Beach Volleyball Association working as assistant tournament director.  The program experienced tremendous growth, which led him to pursue an M.S. in Sports Management from Columbia University. He is currently completing his second year. Brad’s career interests include digital media and strategy, production, and advertising. In his spare time he enjoy surfing, running, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Spring 2016 Project Description

A select group of students in Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies Sports Management program are working closely with FOX Sports executives this semester and evaluating the rapidly changing media landscape and the way sports fans are consuming media.

 

Professor Profile

Tom Richardson

Tom Richardson

Tom Richardson is a media and marketing veteran with broad experience in management, consulting, and teaching. He is president of Convergence Sports & Media, a digital media and marketing consultancy he launched after a corporate career in media and sports. Working with a variety of companies, from well-established properties to startup ventures, Convergence focuses on helping grow and manage businesses in a highly disrupted and increasingly complex media/marketing ecosystem. The firm’s consulting and advisement work includes strategic planning, business and partnership development, marketing, sales, and resourcing. Clients have included NBC Sports, IMG, Bloomberg, WWE, the U.S. Olympic Committee and the PGA of America.

Prior to launching Convergence, Richardson was the GM of Sports & News at AOL, the president of digital at the National Hockey League, and the head of publishing at the National Football League. He started his career at Grey Advertising before moving into publishing at Ziff-Davis.

Richardson is also a member of the faculty in Columbia University’s Sports Management graduate program, where he teaches digital sports media and marketing, and a variety of other courses. He also co-hosts the Program’s sports business podcast, The CUSP Show.

 

In  addition to being a frequent speaker at industry events, Richardson is also one of the organizers of NYVC Sports, a large sports industry meet-up group that integrates New York City’s entrepreneurial, enterprise, and investment communities by hosting special events for a curated network of executives — all at the intersection of the digital and sports marketplaces. He earned his B.A. in English from Hamilton College.

Ray Katz

Ray Katz

Ray Katz is an internationally recognized expert in sports business and sports marketing. He has worked at some of the world’s most notable brands throughout his 25-year career including the National Football League (NFL), Madison Square Garden, American Express and The Walt Disney Company.

Currently, Ray is Managing Partner of ROI Sports Group LLC., and

Previously Ray was EVP, Sports Marketing at Source Communications, where he consulted with brands and sports properties with a focus metrics, analytics and sports marketing return on investment evaluations for clients including Amtrak to Subway.

Prior to joining Source Communications, Ray served in a variety of senior executive-level sports positions including, Managing Partner at OMD/Optimum Sports, CMO of The Football Network, Senior Marketing Director at the National Football League, and Direct Sales Director at Madison Square Garden Company.

Beyond his business experience, Ray has been an adjunct professor at New York University since 1988, first in Direct Marketing, and more recently in the Tisch Institute for Media, Business and Sports Management. He also has been on the faculty at Columbia University since 2009, and has been a regular contributor on Bloomberg Television, and other media outlets.

Ray graduated with distinction with an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania after graduating from Penn Summa Cum Laude, and winning the William D. Gordon award for outstanding graduating senior.
